Be it resolved....

This image is not of anybody in particular. It represents a stereotypical mid-to-late 1800s politician. The image is based on this photo of Maryland politician William Pinkney Whyte. (A great name for a politician)

I couldn't decide which version if the illustration I liked best, so I decided to post both.

Carl was supposed to be sleeping, but the latest issue of The Charismatic Freak couldn't wait. Would he get out of his latest predicament? Could he keep his identity a secret for one more issue? Should he fight the forces of the Evil Green Freak or attend his wedding? Slumberland must wait until the answers are known!

Illustration rendered using MegaPOV Ray Tracer.
Scene was rendered at 800 x 600 resolution. The image took many hours to model. Because of the complexity of the blanket, the image took approximately 15 minutes to render. Post processing was done using JASC Paint Shop Pro 7 (now Corel). The comic book covers for HippoMan and IdiotHead were drawn using Paint Shop Pro and were mapped to the model of the comic book. The images of the superheros were generated using The HeroMachine 2.5. The game boxes under the bed and the poster on the wall were drawn and mapped in a similar fashion. A few bad pixels were fixed. The color of the poster was desaturated and the flashlight under the covers was accentuated. The image was then saturated more to give it a bit bolder colors. It was then resized bigger to 1024 x 768.

Illustration Friday :: Rambunctious

It is a little known fact that the addition of the ninth reindeer to Santa's Sleigh was a result of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). By 1938, tens of reindeer were out of work. It was the time of the Great Depression and Santa Claus was asked to do what he could for down-trodden and out-of-luck deer. The most famous and, arguably, best loved reindeer employed at this time was Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. Few are aware that there was another Reindeer on the sleigh-team prior to Rudolph's arrival in 1939. That reindeer's name was Rambunctious the Rambunctious Reindeer. It was intended that Rambunctious live up to his name and add an extra 'zip' to the team, allowing it to finish its Christmas Eve visit to all the children of the world in a speedier fashion, leaving more time for recuperation for Santa and the rest of the team. Unfortunately, Rambunctious lived up to and exceeded his name. Once harnessed to the sleigh-team, his rambunctious energy caused an unfortunate series of mishaps eventually leading to an unplanned and rather hard landing in a wooded area of western Indiana. Several calls were received by the local sheriff and a couple of deputies were dispatched to the scene. Santa and his team was found shaken but none the worse for wear. They quickly gathered the sleigh and repacked the gifts and were sent on their way. Santa finished his rounds that night, but regrettably, Rambunctious was let go.
The 'photograph' above is the only evidence of that fateful night. The 'photo' was taken just after the sheriff's deputies arrived and shows the overturned sleigh and presents strewn about. Deputies were sworn to secrecy because Santa feared that children would stay awake worrying whether he would have time to visit them.
Not long after the incident, Rudolph was brought on board and the rest, as they, 'Went Down In History!'

Scene was rendered at 800 x 600 resolution. The scene took 40 minutes and 12 seconds to render. Many hours were used to the model and position the scene. I modeled the sleigh using standard CSG solids. The trees were rendered using the Arbaro tree generation for povray program. The resulting image was processed in JASC (now Corel) Paint Shop Pro 7. The image was converted to Grey Scale and Noise was added to give it a grainy look. It was cropped to add the photo edge. The result was tinted yellowish to give it that old look. A coffee stain and some writing were added. The 'photo' was turned slightly and a Drop Shadow added.

I modeled both mouses (mice?) myself. The mousepad graphic was created using Microsoft Paint.
HDR Lighting was used to achieve the realistic lighting and refections.

Memories

This image contains two memories for me. The first is vacationing in the Northern Michigan Area. The "slide" is the Mackinac Bridge that spans the two peninsulas of Michigan. My family spent many summer vacations in this area. Many fond memories.
The other memory in this image is the slide projector. It was always fun to spend an evening darkening the living room, popping some corn, and watching old slides. Kind of a poor-mans theater. I've always preferred watching slides over looking at a pile of photographs.

Sheamus' inability to heed road signs finally caught up to him!

This illustration was rendered entirely in POV-Ray. The scene was inspired by a sign our family saw along a roadside during our trip through Southern Ireland in 1999.
Here is the original photo:
The Cooper model is copyrighted by Gilles Tran and was originally used here. Model is used under Creative Commons Attribution License. The trees were generated by POV-Tree tree generating program. The sign graphic was drawn in Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI and mapped to the model sign. The scene took over eight hours to render on a 1.6 Pentium 4 PC with 512 MB RAM.

I've been tagged by Halloweenville!

RULES: People who are tagged should write a blog post of 6 weird things about them as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don't forget to leave a comment that says "you are tagged" in their comments and tell them to read your blog.

Six weird things about me:

1) I have two toes that have been 'stuck' together all my life.

2) I don't care to walk barefoot on grass. I think this stems back to my childhood when I stepped on a bee and was stung.

3) I sometimes put peanut butter on a hot dog. Don't knock 'til you've tried it! I am willing to bet that everybody eats something that someone else would think was weird.

4) I have trouble using the last of something like a gallon of milk or the last of a box of cereal. This is not as much a problem as it used to be.

5) My kids got me a birthday card that said "You are special" on the front. Inside it said "Mom told us to use 'special' when we mean 'weird'. They think I am very 'special. ;-)

6) I traced this meme back from Nicole Puzzo to Kathy Weller to Majeak Ann to Annax to Jademon to Simmy. Simmy didn't mention the two people who sent it to her.
